Play Drama Romance Overview What to Know First

Five Apps, Six Rounds, No Participation Trophies

It has been some time since short-drama apps were a fringe curiosity. By Sensor Tower’s count, worldwide in-app revenue for the category reached about $700M in Q1 2025, with the US producing 49% of it. Full-year 2025 came in at roughly $2.8–3B, and by Q1 2026 the quarterly figure had risen to about $750M. If you have ever searched a store for a short reels app, you have run into at least one of the five names that lead the conversation: ReelShort, DramaBox, ShortMax, My Drama and DramaWave. On the surface they seem identical, with vertical episodes, www.play-drama.com/series/the-name-she-wrote-in-blood a cliffhanger every minute or two and a weekly pass sitting behind the paywall. What you pay and where you can watch hinge on how they differ beneath the surface, in ownership, pricing, platforms and extras. Over six rounds, we named a winner each time, using only store listings, company terms and published industry data as of September 2026.

Our Side-by-Side Comparison Grid

Ahead of the rounds, here is the full field on a single screen. Prices are the figures listed in the US App Store as of September 2026, and they change by country, platform and promotion. We took install counts from each app’s Google Play listing. The market shares come from Media Partners Asia estimates for the microdrama market outside China. If a cell says « not reported », no reliable source made public the figure, and we would rather leave a gap than guess. See the rounds below as the commentary and the grid as the scoreboard.

Round 1: Ownership and Size

The incumbent is ReelShort, and it still carries the most weight. In August 2022, Crazy Maple Studio, based in Sunnyvale and backed by China’s COL Group, launched it, and MPA credits it with about 29% of the market outside China. For 2026, MPA projects $1.05B, following 2025 revenue of $785M. Singapore’s StoryMatrix runs DramaBox as a subsidiary of Beijing Dianzhong Technology; the app launched in April 2023 and has about 21%. Sensor Tower had ReelShort ahead $130M to $120M in Q1 2025, but by Q1 2026 the two were level at roughly $140M each, with DramaBox ranked first. Though DramaWave, often mistyped as « dreamwave », is the youngest app here, it already has about 13%, and its annualized revenue reportedly topped $700M by Q2 2026. ShortMax, which operates from Hong Kong, appears to be the same app as ShortTV from Jiuzhou Culture. The only one with Fox Entertainment as a shareholder is My Drama, even though it is the minnow with 5M+ Android installs. For context, GoodShort, which sits just outside this lineup, holds about 6%. Round winner: ReelShort, narrowly, on market share.

Round 2: Price

Here, the apps seem most alike. Each of ReelShort, ShortMax, My Drama and DramaWave offers a weekly pass at roughly $19.99 in the US App Store, and each one renews automatically. DramaWave’s weekly VIP starts at $7.99, and ShortMax also offers a $9.99 « Weekly Pass Pro ». DramaBox takes a different route, with auto-renewing memberships at $5.99, $17.99 and $19.99 plus special offers from $4.99. The only verified monthly plan in these US listings, DramaWave’s monthly VIP at $36.99, is the standout. Four weeks of a $19.99 weekly pass total about $80, which makes a monthly plan at less than half that the better buy for steady watchers. Since prices change by country, platform and promotion, the number on your screen may differ. Winner: DramaWave, because its monthly plan beats four weekly renewals by a wide margin.

Round 3: Free Viewing Options

Free viewing is where the marketing turns loud and the details get thin. Per ReelShort’s own blog, the first 5 to 15 episodes of a series are usually free, and one rewarded ad unlocks two premium episodes. Paid coins do not expire, but free reward coins usually do, and a seven-day check-in streak brings 100+ of them. Official ReelShort channels on YouTube, TikTok and Dailymotion are the easiest legitimate way to sample a reel short drama without paying. DramaBox also offers free options, but its exact numbers for free episodes, ad caps and check-in coins show up only in third-party guides. Stay away from look-alike sites, modded APKs and « unlimited coins » generators, which are unofficial and never a safe shortcut. Winner: ReelShort, clearly.

Round 4: Devices and Platforms

Real differences show up on screens, where these apps really split apart. Besides iPhone, iPad, Apple silicon Macs, Vision Pro and Android, ReelShort also streams in a browser at reelshort.com, with progress syncing across devices. ShortMax offers web browsing too, since its domain points to the ShortTV website. DramaWave’s verified presence is its iOS and Android apps, and DramaBox’s website mostly points you back to the app. My Drama plays the trump card, with an Apple TV app for tvOS 18 or later, something ReelShort’s App Store listing does not show. For anyone who only needs a shorts app on your phone, any of the five will do. The winner: ReelShort overall; My Drama takes the living room.

Round 5: Catalog and Originals

No rival matches ShortMax on raw numbers. More than 600 mini-dramas for overseas markets had been produced by the company behind ShortTV as of January 2024 (most of them dubbed Chinese adaptations), and the app advertises 50,000+ dramas in 19 languages. More than 80% of the newly released content on DramaWave is AI-generated, according to reports, and the app claims 30,000+ dramas in 18 languages. When it comes to recognizable hits, ReelShort comes out ahead, thanks to The Double Life of My Billionaire Husband and Fated to My Forbidden Alpha, both of which went viral in November 2023. In response, DramaBox offers an LA production team and originals such as Fake Dating My Rich Nemesis. Since Fox has committed to 200+ vertical titles over two years, My Drama has the most interesting pipeline. Winner: ShortMax, on sheer volume.

Round 6: Extras and the Fine Print

DramaWave easily wins this round. Its App Store listing advertises offline downloads, on-screen comments and 1080p video, and no other app in this comparison is verified to offer offline viewing. For viewers who switch between phone and laptop, ReelShort’s cross-device sync is the next most useful perk. The fine print merits a look too, as it varies more than the prices do. Always cancel in App Store or Google Play settings, because on any of these apps deleting the app does not cancel your subscription. ShortMax’s terms say refunds are not given « unless the paid product/service is unusable », and My Drama forfeits coins after 12 months of inactivity. Winner: DramaWave.

Best For: The Final Verdict

No single short drama app wins every round, which means the best choice depends on how you watch. Best for Apple TV is My Drama, the one app here with a verified tvOS version and the only one with Fox-produced originals. Best for web viewing is ReelShort, thanks to a full browser player and progress that follows you between devices. ShortMax’s claimed 50,000+ dramas overshadow everything else in the grid, making it best for sheer volume. When it comes to commuters and steady bingers, DramaWave is best, combining offline downloads with a $36.99 monthly plan. For backing the current revenue leader, DramaBox is best: Sensor Tower ranked it first in Q1 2026, and it was picked for Disney’s 2025 Accelerator class. ReelShort is once again best for free, legitimate sampling, with its ad unlocks, check-in coins and official social channels. Choose one, cancel the weekly pass you are not using and let the cliffhangers wait a day if all five tempt you.
